5 Cheap Toddler Activities You Can Do Today!

Updated: Jun 29, 2024

Today we are talking all about how to entertain your very active toddler for little to no money.

If you have a child from ages 1-5 you know how important this post is, especially as the warm days of summer continue and the lack of a school schedule is causing boredom and lots of free time. Most of these activities can be done outside or inside if the weather isn't cooperating. These activities are all super affordable and easy so grab a few supplies start playing today!

1. Painters tape racetrack

Grab some painters tape and lay out a racetrack on your floor or your driveway, use a Sharpie for the lane lines to make it more realistic. We already had a large collection of monster trucks and hot wheels from my middle son, but if you don't have these, they are very inexpensive and can usually be found at your local grocery store.

2. Chalk "obstacle course"

In your driveway make a starting line and an ending line with chalk, then draw some circles to jump in, a line to jump over, and some zig zags to run on. This can go as long or as short as you want, then "time" your toddler as they do the course.

3. Colored shaving cream bin

This activity is a bit messy, my favorite time to do this is at the end of the day after everyone has had dinner and there is still an hour or so to kill before bed. I put my toddler in the shower or back, stripped down, with the bin and colored shaving cream and let him play. Once he is done, I just rinse him and the bin in the tub and cleanup is done!

4. Balloon games

Buy a pack of colored balloons and just let them play! My son loves to hit it in the air and see if he can keep it up, hit it against the wall, really any activity that involves him chasing the balloon. It is such a simple and inexpensive activity, but he really loves chasing the balloons and making his own fun with them.

5. Playdough or Kinetic Sand Bin

I LOVE to make a cheap and easy sensory bin, and they are one of the only things that keep my son entertained indoors for any length of time. I purchased a 15 pack of playdough today for $14.99 at our local grocery store and have a 3lb back of kinetic sand that we have used over and over. These tubs are so easy to put the lid on and take them to ballparks, church, or anywhere you will need to get some extended entertainment out of your toddler.

Hopefully this list gave you a few ideas about how to entertain your toddler for little to no money. Summer is such an amazing time to connect with family and make memories, although, the days can get a little long and when you still have a list of things that have to get done the free time can be overwhelming.
